Umber Template โ€” Complete Guide

Umber is a warm, quietly elegant wedding invitation in cream and chocolate, laid out like the website of a wedding studio. Your names are set in engraved small capitals above a wide cover photo in a softly rounded frame, every section title is centred in the same capitals, and little sprigs of wildflowers and olive peek in from the corners of the page.

Umber is one of Fotify's simpler designs: its look comes from one colour you choose โ€” any colour at all โ€” that paints every brown on the page, plus a few switches.

This guide covers how Umber looks, the options unique to it, how to apply it to your event, and how it lays out each section of your invitation.

Umber is available on every plan, Free included.

For an overview of the template gallery and the picker, see How to Customize Your RSVP Invitation.

What makes Umber different

Standard templates change colours and fonts over the same shared layout. Umber replaces the layout itself: its own cover and closing, its own section heads, and its own treatment of the message, countdown, gallery, story, itinerary, venue and reply card.

Signature design elements

  • A studio cover โ€” an optional monogram in a calligraphic italic, a small cover line, your names in large engraved small capitals and your cover photo wide in a softly rounded frame, with the date, the time and the place between two fine lines under it
  • One brown, everywhere โ€” the band under your message, the brown cards of your day, the buttons, the section titles and the small labels all take the colour you pick
  • A testimonial-style message โ€” your message on a white card with a photo on one side, laid across a brown band
  • Botanical sprigs โ€” our own small drawings of wildflowers and olive branches peeking in from the corners of the cover, a few sections, the reply card and the close
  • Your name across the foot โ€” the page ends with your event name as a giant wordmark spanning the full width
  • Typography โ€” Marcellus SC, an engraved serif in true small capitals, for your names, the titles and the buttons; Castoro for the large figures and times and the monogram; Rosario, a light humanist sans, for the reading text
  • Always readable โ€” whatever colour you pick, even a pale yellow or a near-black, it is deepened just enough to read on the cream, and the text on it turns cream or white, whichever reads best

When to choose Umber

Umber suits warm, understated celebrations:

  • Countryside, vineyard and farmhouse weddings โ€” earthy browns, olive sprigs and a landscape band of your photo under the venue
  • Autumn weddings โ€” chocolate, oxblood or olive on cream
  • Engagement parties โ€” your story as a row of photos with titles in small capitals
  • Vow renewals โ€” a quiet, timeless page with your names across its foot

Whatever the occasion, the photos your guests take matter as much as the invitation. Guests can scan the event QR code and add their photos to the shared gallery. See how Fotify works for weddings.

Applying Umber to your event

  1. Open your event, click Invitation in the sidebar, then the Invitation tab
  2. In Design Template, click Change template if the gallery is collapsed, and find Umber under Designs (it is listed under the Wedding filter, and under Elegant too)
  3. Optional: press Try it on to see Umber with your own invitation details in the live preview โ€” nothing is saved until you press Use this design
  4. Or click the Umber card to apply it straight away
  5. Open Umber options below the gallery to pick your brown and the other options described below. Changes save automatically

Umber works on every plan. On free events a small "Made with Fotify" badge appears in the bottom corner of the invitation; any paid plan or an active subscription removes it.

Switching to another template later is non-destructive: your event content stays exactly as you entered it, and your Umber options are kept in case you switch back.

Umber options

Umber has seven options of its own. They take the place of the standard colour and font controls, which Umber doesn't use.

1. Brown

The chocolate of the page: the band under your message card, the brown cards of your day, the buttons, the section titles and the small labels. Pick it two ways:

  • A suggested swatch โ€” Umber (default), Olive, Oxblood, Slate or Espresso
  • Pick any color โ€” the last chip opens your device's colour picker, so you can match your wedding colour exactly. The colour's code is shown beside the chips

Any colour works: a light colour is deepened (keeping its hue) until it reads on the cream, and the text on the brown band and cards turns cream or white, whichever reads best. A grey stays grey.

2. Itinerary cards

The colour of the cards that hold the moments of your day:

  • Alternating near-black and brown (default)
  • All near-black
  • All brown

3. Botanical sprigs

On by default. Turn it off to remove the small sprigs of wildflowers and olive from the corners of the page. It also removes the sprigs that stand in for a missing photo (on the cover, the message card, the story and the venue), which then stay plain.

4. Monogram

Up to 7 characters set in a calligraphic italic at the top of the cover, with a fine line under it, exactly as you type them โ€” for example your initials, "A & J". Leave it blank and no monogram is shown; Umber never makes one up from your names.

5. Name across the foot

On by default: the page ends with your event name as a giant wordmark across its full width, sized to fit its length (a very long name wraps over two lines). Turn it off to end the page on the closing line and the reply button.

6. Cover line

The small line above your names on the cover (up to 80 characters). Leave it blank to use the default ("You are invited to the wedding of"). Try "Together with their families".

7. Closing line

The title at the end of the page, above the reply button (up to 80 characters). Leave it blank to use the default ("We can't wait to celebrate with you").

Every piece of text Umber prints on the invitation โ€” the cover line, the Kindly reply buttons, the section labels and titles, the title on the message band, the gallery captions, the countdown units, the closing line โ€” can also be rewritten directly on the page: switch the live preview into edit mode and double-click the text. Section titles you have already set in their own settings (story, countdown, gifts, where to stay, getting there, FAQs) are edited in place the same way.

How each section is treated

Cover

Umber's cover replaces the standard header, centred on the cream:

  • Your monogram (option 4), when you set one
  • The cover line (option 6) in small spaced capitals
  • Your event name in large engraved small capitals. Long names step down a size so they never break mid-word
  • Your cover photo, wide in a softly rounded frame, with a wildflower sprig at one corner and an olive sprig at the other. It keeps the horizontal crop you set
  • The date and the time and the place, between two fine lines โ€” the time follows the Show time setting of your invitation's cover, the date and the place follow Show date and Show location, and every guest sees the date you picked, whatever their time zone
  • Kindly reply โ€” a brown button that scrolls to the RSVP form. It only appears when your RSVP section is visible, and never on a save-the-date page

Without a cover photo, the frame is a brown panel with a sprig drawn in it.

Section heads

Each section opens centred: its label in small spaced capitals and its title in brown engraved small capitals, balanced over two lines when it is long. A few sections (countdown, story, gifts, event details) have a sprig peeking in from a corner.

Message โ€” a card across a brown band

A brown band carries a title in light small capitals ("With joy, we invite you", which you can rewrite in edit mode). Under it, a white card overhangs the foot of the band: a photo on one side and your message on the other, opened by a large quote mark. The photo is the first photo of your gallery (in the order you set), or your cover photo when the gallery is empty; reorder the gallery or change the cover and it changes too. With no photo at all, the card shows a sprig on that side. A long message steps down a size.

Countdown โ€” four figures between fine lines

Days, hours, minutes and seconds as large figures, each with its name under it and a fine line above and below โ€” four across on a wide screen, two by two on a phone. It counts down to your event's date and time in the venue's time zone, and shows your completed message once the moment arrives.

Gallery (Carousel) โ€” tall tiles

Your photos as tall portrait tiles in a row that slides sideways. Each tile has a caption in small capitals on a soft dark shade at its foot โ€” "Moment" with the tile's number in Roman numerals (I, II, IIIโ€ฆ); rewrite "Moment" in edit mode. Two square arrow buttons appear when there are more photos than fit.

Story โ€” a row of photos on fine lines

Every milestone is a column: its photo rising out of the cream (its top fades away), its title in brown small capitals between two fine lines, its date and its text. Up to three side by side on a wide screen (a last row that is not full is centred), one under another on a phone. Every milestone is set the same way; one without a date or a text leaves that part out, and one without a photo shows a small sprig in the photo's place when it sits beside milestones with photos.

Itinerary โ€” near-black and brown cards

The moments of your day as a row of cards, up to three per line: the time set large, the title in small capitals, your note, and the place as a small outlined label at the foot. The cards alternate near-black and brown, starting again with near-black on each day so a full row reads near-black, brown, near-black, or are all one colour (option 2). A day heading appears only when the day has a date or a label. Entry icons are not shown.

Location โ€” a landscape band

Under the section's title, your cover photo spans the full width of the page as a wide landscape band whose top and bottom fade into the cream (it keeps the horizontal crop you set). Under it: your address in small capitals, your directions and an Open in Maps button. Changing or removing your cover photo changes the band too; without one, a sprig sits in its place. The map itself is not embedded: the button opens your venue in Maps.

RSVP โ€” the reply card

"We hope you can join us" with your RSVP deadline under it, and the reply form on a white card with a fine brown line inside its edge, a wildflower sprig in one corner and an olive sprig in the other. The Send button is brown, in the same small capitals as the titles. On a save-the-date page the card holds the save-the-date note instead of the form.

Gifts, Event Details and Save the Date

These three sections share their structure with Fotify's other picker-coloured designs (Meridian, Thread, Prism and Duotone), dressed in Umber's cream and brown: white cards with small corners, small spaced-capital labels, titles in small capitals and brown buttons. Their icons sit in small squares outlined in your brown.

  • Gifts โ€” every registry, payment option, charity and wishlist item is its own card in a grid, grouped under small labels (with a count) when you offer more than one kind. Payment details sit in an inset box with a Copy button, and long account numbers wrap inside the card. Pay links, scan-to-pay QR codes and wishlist reservations appear as buttons on each card
  • Event Details โ€” a card per topic: dress code with your suggested and avoided colours as swatches, where to stay with each hotel as a mini-card (distance, price range, promo code, notes and a Book button), getting there with an icon for each kind of transport, and a full-width FAQ card where each question opens on tap
  • Save the Date (Calendar) โ€” one card with the title and the event date on one side, and Google, Apple (downloads the calendar file) and Outlook buttons on the other

Closing

The page closes on a slightly deeper cream, like the footer of a studio website: your closing line (option 7) as a title, the date and the place, a Kindly reply button and, unless you turn it off (option 5), your event name as a giant wordmark across the foot. Sprigs peek in from the two top corners.

Sections that use the shared layout

These sections keep Fotify's shared layout and are dressed in Umber's style:

  • Photo upload, QR code, Table assignment, Playlist, Sub-events, Special treatments and custom sections

Each sits in the same column as the rest of the page on a white card, with titles in brown small capitals and buttons in your brown. Photos in custom sections are capped in height so a tall portrait never takes over the page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where does the photo on the message card come from? A: It is the first photo of your gallery, in the order you set. With an empty gallery it is your cover photo, and with neither, the card shows a sprig instead. Reorder your gallery or change your cover photo and the card follows.

Q: Why does my cover photo also appear under the venue? A: Umber uses your cover photo twice: on the cover, and as the wide landscape band above your venue's address. It keeps the horizontal crop you set. Change or remove your cover photo in the invitation's cover settings and both change with it.

Q: I picked a light colour. Why does it look darker? A: The brown is used for titles on the cream and as a band that carries light text, so a light colour is deepened, keeping its hue, until both read clearly. A grey stays grey.

Q: Where does the monogram come from? A: Only from the Monogram option. Leave it blank and the cover has no monogram; Umber never makes initials up from your names.

Q: Does Umber work in right-to-left languages? A: Yes. In Hebrew and Arabic the layout mirrors: the sprigs move to the other corners, the gallery slides the other way and the text of the cards aligns to the right. The cover photo's crop stays as you set it, and times and figures always read left to right.

Q: Does the page move? A: Only gently: the cover photo settles as the page opens, section titles sharpen out of a soft blur as they scroll into view, and gallery photos zoom in slightly when you point at them. Guests whose device asks for reduced motion see a still page.
